Landscape Lighting

Summer Gardening Tips
One of the simple things you can do is don't water just before dark. High humidity can cause a lot of problems with the plants in your garden and around your house. Make sure your plants are nice and dry when you tuck them in for the night and you can cut down on the chance of fungus being a problem. One of the more common fungi that I get asked about a lot is powdery mildew. There is little you can do except prune out the affected branch, cutting it as far back as possible.Fire Blight is very contagious to plants so you should burn the branches you prune out. Tell me I'm wrong, but I know I'm not.A lot of people are victims of this nasty little fungus, but they don't know it.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Study natural daylight.

Dont overlight.

Consider the reflectance of plant material.

Use light to show whats important (focal points, paths, etc)

Hide the light sources.

Use several different lighting techniques (moonlighting, uplighting, etc)

Allow for plant growth and flexibility.

LIGHTING TECHNIQUES:

Uplighting (light placed below an object and shining up)

Tips on Dealing with Slugs and Snails in the Garden
Barriers:These methods will be more effective against snails than slugs, as slugs live in the ground and can therefore avoid barriers. Dig a pond to encourage frogs and toads; leave out food for hedgehogs; and put up bird feeders. This can be effective for around six weeks. If you are lucky enough to have the space, adopt some chickens or ducks they just love eating slugs and you can have some free eggs into the bargain.Make your garden wildlife friendly, to encourage the natural predators of slugs and snails to come and visit. This will not provide an instant fix for the problem, but in the long term will give you a healthier garden with fewer pests.Till next time, happy slug hunting!

Moonlighting (light placed up high to filter through tree branches to simulate full moon light)

Spotlighting (light produces a highly focused beam of light)

Accent lighting Grazing (light positioned close to a vertical surface to bring out the texture)

Silhouetting (light placed behind an object to light a background to silhouette the outline of the object)

Shadowing (light placed in front of an object to shine the outline of the object against the surface behind)

Rose Garden Tips
Refraining from planting your rose in an area that fills with puddles will aid in your successful rose gardening. Treating your plants at the first sign of Japanese beetles is going to save their luscious green leaves from these tiny creatures. You will need to water your roses at least once a week as your rose establishes itself. If you have a partially shaded area where you want to grow new rose bushes, you may want to consider moving your plants to where your roses will receive at least six hours of sun a day or more. The blackened portions of your rose bush need pruned away to promote additional new growth over the entire plant.

WHEN TO USE LOW-VOLTAGE (12-volt) VS. LINE VOLTAGE (120-volt):

Use line voltage for: uplighting very large trees, long driveway, or anywhere you need a lot of light installations with 3 or less fixtures.

Low-voltage is best when:

you anticipate changing light locations people, animals, children, etc. will be digging there is water close by, when you want to do it yourself installation costs are important you want smaller fixtures the landscaping is already installed.

Like Fall Flowers - A Tip To Care For Your Winter Garden Pond
This may be a bit controversial but I would err on the side of doing it. If you have a pump that creates a small fountain it will keep a space ice free.Don't over-feed your fish. It seems to help with the slime coating and also get rid of some of the bacteria and fungus that begin in garden ponds. In the colder climates there are some important tips I have for you. Does this remind you of what you need to due with your fall flowers?Do You Have Fish? You should consider doing several things. Like fall flowers these toxic chemicals need a place to go. If you are susceptible to the water freezing you need to read on.The debris that collects in the garden ponds can give off toxic waste including gases.

Adding landscape lighting improves curb appeal, expands living space and increases the safety and security of your home. The right lighting creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the exterior of your home and your yard.

Solar Outdoor Lighting Tips And Ideas
Whatever function you choose, one of the big advantages to using this kind of outdoor lighting is that you don't have to run cables or wiring of any kind. Basically, if a light stops functioning there's not much to do with it other than just throw it away and replace it. As far as maintenance is concerned, there really isn't much. Low voltage lighting still has to be plugged into a power outlet in order to function, even though the voltage level is very low and relatively safe. If however, it only needs to have the batteries replaced they are usually readily available at most home improvement stores.
